How Can You Use Turmeric for Your Health?
Turmeric contains a chemical compound known as curcurmin. Cucurmin is a potent anti-inflammatory compound that can help fight chronic inflammation. It also has power antioxidant effects and neutralizes free radicals on its own. It can also stimulate the body's own antioxidant enzymes. Cucurmin also boost levels of BDNF, brain-derived neurotropic factor, which increases the growth of new neurons and fights various degenerative processes in the brain. Cucurmin can also lower the risk of heart disease by improving endothelial function (the lining of the blood vessels). Cucurmin leads to several changes on the molecular level and can help prevent cancerous growths.
Many of my patients also describe that turmeric helps with their joint inflammation. This is supported by many studies that show that cucurmin can help treat symptoms of arthritis. Turmeric can also aid with treating depression, diabetes and hypertension. Turmeric is generally well-tolerated, especially when consumed as part of a regular diet. When it is used as a supplement in higher doses, it may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as stomach upset, nausea or diarrhea. When taken as a food, there are few concerns about turmeric. However, if taken as a supplement (pill), people with gallbladder disease should taken caution, since turmeric can cause gallbladder contractions). People who are taking blood thinners should also take caution, since taking a turmeric supplement can increase the risk of bleeding. While it can be used to aid diabetes treatment, in high doses and in combination with diabetes medication, it can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Similarly, people who are going for surgery should stop their turmeric supplement at least a week before surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid high doses, and people with iron deficiency should take caution since turmeric supplements can interfere with the absorption of iron. Lastly, turmeric supplements can increase the risk of kidney stones by increasing calcium oxalate.
It is always important for patients to consult with their doctor before starting a turmeric supplement. Otherwise, enjoy it in in a curry or in a smoothie!
